Armenia is the second most militarised country in the world. The situation with neighbouring Azerbaijan is one of the factors behind this high militarisation. In 2020, a new war broke out over the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh, a historical territory populated mainly by Armenians. The war ended with Armenia’s defeat against the Azeris, to whom it surrendered a large part of the territory. After this conflict, on 12 May, a new conflict began along the border with Azerbaijan, which continues nowadays.

The Donbass conflict, which began in 2014, escalated into a full-scale war after the Russian invasion in February 2022. Since then, Ukraine has become the scene of Europe’s latest war. In the early days of the war, civilian fleeing took centre stage across Ukraine. Many civilians lost their lives in their attempt to escape. At the same time, thousands of Ukrainians began to resist the invasion. After a year of conflict, Ukraine has demonstrated its resilience in the fight against Russia. On the way, major battles have been fought in which Ukrainian soldiers have given their lives to defend their territory and civilians have tried to survive under constant shelling. Since the beginning of the Russian invasion, at least 10,000 civilians have died in this conflict. The cruelty of war returns to Europe in the 21st century, bringing us closer to death, destruction and sadness.

The Donbass region in eastern Ukraine has been the scene, since the beginning of 2014, of a war between Ukraine and the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk Republics. Life goes on in the frontline villages but the problems for civilians continue. After the start of the war thousands of families fled from the horror but not all had the opportunity to flee. A large part of the population living near the frontline is older people who did not have the option to escape. The conflict divided the region into two and this was link with a lack of job opportunities, so those who did not leave for fear of shells left because of necessity.
